Widow Edith Arneau, ex French Variety Theatre Star, not wanted by her in-laws in France returns to England residing at  Oaklands, a sheltered residential home for widows where she causes the staff some despair by  her mischievious behaviour. When her cabinet of valuable fans goes missing from her rooms she requests Maree, friend  and assistant matron, together with her own  nephew Treve, accompany her on a search-cum-holiday return trip to France. On the ferry they are joined by Antoine, a long time Policeman friend of Edith. Simon Markham, ex fiancée of Maree, attaches himself to Edith though he is also accompanied by a female on the boat. Simon Markham, ex- fiancée of  Maree, also surprises them by appearing aboard. Though his intentions are unknown  his presence causes concern also surprises them by appearing aboard. Though his intentions are unknown his presence causes concern, especially when Edith is abducted. She is soon discovered. Edith goes against her friends’ advice when Simon invites her aboard his boat in French waters. He does not know Edith well. He has no knowledge of her sailing and navigational capabilities. When Edith discovers her missing cabinet hidden on the boat she devises her own plan for successfully retrieving it.
